I got this bass in a trade, and it is in great condition. It looks gorgeous in 3-Color Sunburst with tortoise shell scratch plate and lovely tinted gloss maple neck with Indian Laurel fingerboard. This one is particularly special as it is very lightweight at only 3.34kg which is 7.36lbs – they usually weigh a fair amount more than this – so can be used on longer gigs with ease. This bass is now discontinued, unfortunately so cannot be purchased new as far as I can tell.
These are great basses, but online reviews suggest they usually need a good set up when bought new as they can have a high action. This bass had been professionally setup by the previous owner, which included fret-levelling and re-profiling, re-finishing, and smoothing of the fret edges. Action was lowered considerably from factory and the bass has been fitted with new flatwound strings – it now plays like a dream, frets are excellent and lovely smooth fret ends – it now plays like a dream!
Many reviews online suggest that these basses look, play and sound as good as Mexican Fender basses – I don’t know as I don’t currently have a Fender to compare it with, however it’s one of the nicest P-basses I’ve played, the neck profile is slightly narrower than a standard Precision – a nice compromise between a Jazz and Precision. It has a great solid punchy sound, and the added Jazz single coil pickup provides a useful array of sounds.
