Vintage 1984 Tokai Hard Puncher Bass – LIGHTWEIGHT 8lbs 12oz
Beautiful original classic bass built in Japan in 1984 and, according to Tokai catalogues from the early 1980s, based on 1958-62 Fender Precision Bass. Recently fully cleaned and set up with quality DR round wound strings.
This bass is in very good condition, neck and frets are great. Cosmetically there are marks and nicks about the body, general wear expected of a bass this age that has been played and enjoyed. Everything looks original to me, including the pickup and wiring as can be seen in the photos. The pickup sounds punchy and full, exactly as a P-bass should.
This is a light bass at 8lbs 12oz (3.97kg) and has had a really good set up, low action and fitted with DR round wound strings (45-105). It has a comfortable C-shaped neck profile and is very nice to play. Frets are all in great condition and it has a really nice action. Sound is punchy and powerful as you would expect from a quality Tokai Hard Puncher.
The Tokai Hard Puncher models are highly regarded among players and collectors. Many feel that the quality of these basses equal and often exceed the build quality of American P-Basses from this era. The same was said of the Fenders made in Japan at that time – and this bass is an actual vintage instrument.

In 1982 the western guitar market was shocked into submission. Never before had it seen instruments of such quality from a Japanese builder. Tokai had come to town and had changed the entire perception of the guitar world forever! Their arrival brought about a knee-jerk reaction from the world’s existing major manufacturers. However, by this time, Tokai had firmly established itself as a builder of unquestionable reputation and precision. Unlike many of its competitors, Tokai founded by Tadayouki Adachi in Hamamatsu in 1947, still remains a genuine family concern.
